about the images |
All the images on this web site are scans of chemical photographic
images created in a camera with a single exposure. The only electronic
manipulation is to make the electronic images look as much like the photographs
as possible. Color scans from the years 1999, and 2000, and all black and white scans, were created by photographing prints, then scanning those negatives. In other words, there’s an extra generation involved, which tends to lower the quality slightly. Color scans from 2001 (and later) are scans of original negatives. The Blues- For some reason it’s hard to get an acceptable scan of a photo with lots of blue in it. It’s the least true of all the colors, and the most likely to display artifacts. The Jpeg compression format seems particularly rough on fields of blue. Therefore scans with blue skies are not as heavily compressed and may take a bit longer to display. |
